Working with The Chef Tree in Cheltenham
Cheltenham has been welcoming visitors for almost three hundred years, ever since the discovery of the first natural spring in 1716 led to the development of this fashionable, vibrant, Regency spa town with its painted stucco facades and intricate ironwork balconies. It has an exceptional range of quality accommodation, fabulous cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants, with outside seating areas offering a café culture and cosmopolitan atmosphere, and award-winning stylish shopping.
As the cultural centre for the Cotswolds, it has an abundance of fantastic festivals all year round, from regular horseracing meets held at the town’s famous Cheltenham Racecourse, culminating in the Gold Cup at The Festival in March, through to the internationally renowned four main festivals of Jazz, Science, Music and Literature.
Voted the Best Place to Live in the South West 2020 by The Sunday Times with its education, culture and connectivity highlighted amongst its best attributes. As the most complete Regency town in the UK with a population of just 117,000, Cheltenham is intimate and friendly, a civilised place of culture, learning and discovery.
Cheltenham is also an exciting foodie destination, with so many unique restaurants to explore and discover. There really is something to suit every palate – from David Everitt Matthias’s Michelin-starred ‘Le Champignon Sauvage’, to dining on food from around the world, unique food from independently run eateries, guide book recommended restaurants and many award-winning restaurants.

Cheltenham Food Scene
Cheltenham’s foodie scene is critically respected and continues to blaze a trail, something that Harden’s Best UK Restaurants 2022 highlighted. The charming spa town achieved joint second alongside larger cities including Edinburgh and Manchester in the ‘Top 100 – UK’s Best Restaurant’ towns, confirming its status as a popular UK foodie destination.
Cheltenham should be THE destination for food fanatics everywhere, with a matchless blend of high street and street food, independent, award-winning plus 60+ places to eat outdoors. Topping the bill is of course the Michelin Star restaurant ‘Le Champignon Sauvage’ found in The Suffolks, offering an ever-changing, premier menu for the discerning diner.
Cheltenham is also home to a number of notable food experiences which are perfect on-the-go or for those with a smaller budget. A few of the most popular restaurants with locals include Paparritos who offer awesome burritos, The Gloucester Old Spot for it’s great pub grub and Bar & Wok noodle bar which has been a firm local favourite for over a decade.
Independent restaurants line almost every street, most using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There are also a wide selection of well known branded food outlets, family favourites and new restaurants with awards to their name.
Cheltenham is fortunate to be able to offer many beer gardens and al fresco dining experiences, allowing you to sample the continental atmosphere on offer, from the cafes on the Promenade to the restaurants and bistros in the districts of Montpellier and more modern Brewery Quarter. Many cafes and venues also provide evening entertainment on a regular basis, with local and well-known musicians performing, especially at weekends.
Cheltenham Food Hub Areas
The Promenade: The Promenade is a beautiful tree-lined shopping street that leads from High Street to the independent area of Montpellier. It is the height of cool cafe culture and is home to the grand Regency Municipal Buildings where Cheltenham Borough Council has its offices.
Thanks to its large pedestrianised area, the Prom is home to bars and restaurants which offer outdoor seating under the trees for you to soak up the atmosphere. There are also a number of bars and restaurants within the Regency building basements, and plenty of choice for quick lunches or leisurely dinners.
Montpellier: A trip to the Montpellier Quarter in Cheltenham is a real delight for any gastronome. The area is filled with independent restaurants of all types, but you will also find plenty of well-known food chains that can also be found in many other towns and cities including London.
Those who are used to dining out in London will know that there are plenty of opportunities for al fresco dining and the same is certainly true for Montpellier Quarter of Cheltenham. Cafes and restaurants in the area have a very cosmopolitan vibe, and a meal or snack in one of the bistros is a great way to end a shopping trip.
The Brewery Quarter: The great thing about Cheltenham is that is it large enough to offer a huge variety of eating experiences but also small enough so that your close to all of the action the town has to offer. The Brewery Quarter is Cheltenham’s entertainment hub which means it offers a range of big name eating brands as well as a range of bars that offer a relaxed vibe to proceedings.

How The Chef Tree helps Cheltenham
The Chef Tree has over ten years of experience in placing great chefs in great venues around the town. We have worked with the smallest kitchens to ensure they have staff who are able to bring life to the food vision. We have also worked with some of the larger chain businesses, placing chefs that can follow their tried and tested kitchen delights.
